In a surprise pivot away from the indie darlings favored by many critics, the Producers Guild of America nominated big-budget studio features for its best-picture slate.
The five finalists are A Beautiful Mind; Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone; The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring; Moulin Rouge; and Shrek.
Collectively those films have earned roughly $900 million at the U.S. box office and about $1.9 billion worldwide.
Notably, Shrek marks the first animated feature to receive a PGA citation.
Studios behind the nominees include Universal (A Beautiful Mind domestically, with DreamWorks handling its overseas), Warner Bros. (Harry Potter), New Line (The Lord of the Rings), Fox (Moulin Rouge) and DreamWorks (Shrek).
Several critics’ best-picture choices — such as In the Bedroom, Memento and Mulholland Drive — were left off the PGA list.
Historically the PGA’s selections have often aligned with the Oscars: the Darryl F. Zanuck Producer of the Year honoree has gone on to win the Best Picture Oscar in nine of the 12 years the award has existed, including Gladiator last year.
Last year four of the PGA’s five nominees also secured Oscar nominations for Best Picture; in the two years before that the PGA and Academy matched on three of five titles.
On the television side, HBO led the PGA nominations with six of 15 slots, including The Sopranos and Six Feet Under for drama series and Sex and the City for comedy; HBO’s 61*, Band of Brothers and Wit were contenders in the David L. Wolper longform category.
The PGA’s announcements did not list individual producers; those names will be revealed Feb. 13 as the organization continues its accreditation process and enforcement of tightened producer-credit standards.
Producers excluded from credits will have 48 hours to file appeals.
Winners will be revealed at the PGA’s 13th annual awards ceremony on March 3 at the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles.
